Think ahead or sit outside!
One $32 ticket is your passport to both Roller Derby Night at the Seattle Storm game on Friday, July 14, and to the Rat City Rollergirls' July 15 bout -- the league's first-ever hometown game against an out-of-state team, Portland's Rose City Rollers.

First, rub elbows with rollergirls on Friday, July 14 when the Rat City Rollergirls swarm Key Arena to help cheer the Seattle Storm on to victory against the New York Liberty. Skaters and mascots from Seattle's only all-female, flat-track roller derby league will show Seattle Storm fans how they rock and roll, and fans who attend will get first crack at a special pre-sale for the August bout.

Then, on Saturday, attend the hometown derby girls' battle against Portland and bout and see them wilt some Roses! With all of our P-town friends headed north, the July 15 bout is gonna sell out at lightning speed. There is one, and only one, way to lock down your ticket for the July bout. If you act now, you won't be the only kid on your block to miss the most exciting weekend yet for Seattle roller derby.

One weekend + One ticket = Two amazing opportunities to see some of Seattle's most exciting female athletes, not to mention some from Oregon. Tickets are on sale now here.

A Bumberdeal on Bumbershoot
Bumbershoot tickets go on sale to the public on July 15th at $25 for a daily ticket, and $70 for a 3-day pass. At the gate, pay $30 for a single day, and $80 for a 3-day pass.

However, there is a special pre-sale offer going on now (until July 14, or whenever discounted tickets sell out) -- pay only $18 for the daily ticket, or $50 for a 3-day pass! Plus, during the pre-sale only, the ticket surcharge will be waived!

Go to bumbershoot.org/presale and type in our special access code: "RCRG." Once the pre-sale is over, the $18 daily tickets and $50 3-day passes will no longer be available anywhere, so don't delay.

The 2006 Bumbershoot will feature the Bumberbout Flat Track Derby Invitational, co-hosted by the Rat City Rollergirls, with eight of the best flat-track roller derby teams in the nation vying for the first-ever Bumberbout title.

The tournament will be held one day only -- Saturday, Sept. 2nd, from noon to 10 p.m. at Key Arena.

Here's who else is coming:

How big is your lens?
The Rat City Rollergirls love it when people take photos at their bouts and share them. Point-and-shoot cameras are always welcome, but commercial and video cameras are now prohibited unless you make arrangements with us ahead of time. Wanna bring a bigger lens than the one on your camera phone or point-and-shoot camera? To be considered for commercial-sized camera or video camera access at our bouts, please click here for more information.
A wee tryout
The Rat City Rollergirls are holding a wee, mid-season tryout on Tuesday, June 20 so the ladies of Grave Danger can fill their hearse with a few more fabulous, undead skaters. Because we are mid-season and need girls that can ramp up fast to play in a month or so, please consider skipping this tryout if you are shaky on your skates, or just curious about roller derby. There will be a not-so-wee league tryout towards the end of the year. At that time, we will be more apt to take on girls of all skill levels that we can develop in the off-season. For more information, including a list of requirements, please go here.

MEET-AND-GREET

This is your chance each month to learn a little more about some Rat City Rollergirls. This month, the spotlight shines on Bruise Lee of Grave Danger, Cherry Jubilee of the Derby Liberation Front, Valtron 3000 of the Throttle Rockets, and Dixie Dragstrip of the Sockit Wenches.

Bruise Lee -- Grave Danger, #75

What would you be doing if you weren't a rollergirl?
I'd be spending way too much money on stuff I don't need, and I'd probably have a cleaner house and a nicer yard.

What do you do for a living?
I work in the mortgage servicing department at the best credit union in Seattle.

What actress would play you in a movie about your life and why?
Animal from the Muppets.

What is one thing most people would be surprised to find out about you?
I have an 11-and-1/2 (can't forget the half!) year old son. And I broke my arm skating when I was in 1st grade (who says you can't skate down stairs??!!!).

What is the hardest thing for you about roller derby?
(Hitting) the floor.

What's your favorite article of clothing?
My Grave Danger hoodie.

What is the last CD you bought?
I buy more records than CD's. The last record I bought was Louis Armstrong. Seriously.

Do you have any phobias?
Nah, not really. But, I'm not too thrilled with dolls that have eyes that open and shut. YIPES! That Twilight Zone episode FREAKED me out when I was 4!

Do you have any pet peeves?
1. People who think they're always right.
2. People who talk too much.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
I'd be invisible. I wouldn't want to stay that way, but it would be fun to be able to turn invisible whenever you wanted to.

What's in the trunk of your car?
Bodies. And jumper cables.

What's your least favorite smell?
Burnt hair and poop.

What is one thing you want to do before you die?
Live a lot longer.

Cherry Jubilee -- Derby Liberation Front, #42

What would you be doing if you weren't a rollergirl?
Getting enough sleep, reading, watching a lot of bad movies. Now that the weather is nice, I'd probably be doing lots of inline skating on the trails around Seattle.

How did you come up with your skate name?
My favorite X-Men character is Jubilee, and I was trying to come up with names that had something to do with my crayon-red hair. Thus, Cherry Jubilee was born.

What do you do for a living?
I'm a Web Application Developer. I make my coworkers call me Web Dev Diva, though.

What's your favorite food (or foods)?
Almost anything on the menu at Rainbow Drive-in in Honolulu and anything that falls into the category "fried stuff with cheese."

What actress would play you in a movie about your life and why?
Gillian Anderson for no other reason that I've had a huge crush on her since the X-Files. Oh, and we're the same height.

What is one thing most people would be surprised to find out about you?
That I grew up in Hawaii, but I don't know how to swim.

What kind of player do you think you are?
Fair to middlin'? I've definitely improved lately, but I'm not a star skater. I'm pretty solid in the pack, and can make a good block or give my jammer an assist. My main strategy up until this point has been just to be in the way.

What are your favorite movies?
Velvet Goldmine, Star Wars, The Princess Bride, The Dark Crystal, and every film by Pedro Almodovar that I've seen.

Do you have a tattoo?
I've got 2. The first one is on my left shoulder blade, and it's a moon and stars. My most recent tattoo I got at RollerCon, and it's a green roller skate with red wheels that has a banner reading "Cherry Jubilee" across it. It's on my left shoulder. And, after it took 3 days to scrub off my skater number written on my arm for the game, I'm seriously considering getting that tattooed on my arm just below the skate. It is the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything, after all.

Valtron 3000 -- Throttle Rockets
What would you be doing if you weren't a rollergirl?
Drinking a lot more and hanging out with my pre-derby friends. I'd probably be surfing every weekend in the summer instead of playing derby.

What do you do for a living?
I'm a graduate student at the University of Washington working on my Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology.

Do you have any superstitions before bouting?
Sacrifice a small child's favorite toy (Throttle Rockets hate kids).

What actress would play you in a movie about your life and why?
Parker Posey. I'm obsessed with her and she plays a good bossy girl (see Party Girl and House of Yes).

What other hobbies do you have?
Surfing, camping and hiking. Oh, and did I say drinking?

What is one thing most people would be surprised to find out about you?
I am a total klutz when I'm not on skates. And, I have the largest feet on the league.

What is the hardest thing for you about roller derby?
The time commitment, since it cuts back on my loafing around and drinking.

How did you feel about the last bout?
Awesome. I felt like I jammed really well and all the Throttle Rockets played well together. After taking so many fresh meat at the beginning of the season, it took us a while to work them into the derby machine we were last year. I felt like last game we finally gelled as a team. The second half of the season will be a whole new game for us....we're like "growrlllll" (tiger sound with claw motion).

What's your favorite article of clothing?
Flip-flops.

What was the last CD you bought?
Gnarls Barkley

Do you have any phobias?
I hate feet.

Who is your favorite rollergirl?
My derby fiance, Dirty Little Secret.

Dixie Dragstrip -- Sockit Wenches, #454

What would you be doing if you weren't a rollergirl?
Some of my favorite hobbies used to include preparing elaborate dinners and planning fun parties with friends. I would probably resurrect that, and read more!

What do you do for a living?
I am an Environmental Engineer for a county transportation agency. I work on large and small transportation-related projects to assure that they are in compliance with regulatory requirements. The job requires a lot of teamwork, planning and time management, just like roller derby business and bout management!

What actress would play you in a movie about your life and why?
Did someone already pick Dolly Parton? Too bad, that is my choice because she is my hero for kicking ass, and shootin' from the hip! She says the funniest things too, and is so nice. She rules and can sing! I can't, but in my mind, my life is a musical satirical comedy.

What is one thing most people would be surprised to find out about you?
That I am totally irrational when it comes to flying! Not that this is a secret amongst my close friends, family and league mates that I have flown with: I am pretty damn scared to fly on commercial airlines. My little sister, Marissa and Basket Casey are my favorite people to sit next to on flights because they are so calm! – I need to sit as far away from Rettig to Rumble as possible on a flight; she feeds into my terror! But okay...Surprise! I love the scariest carnival rides and I have been sky diving several times. I have no problem jumping out of small airplanes at 12,000 feet and doing backwards barrel rolls, but I have to be medicated like Mr. T as BA Baracus on the A-Team to fly on big commercial flights! I pity the fool that has to sit next to me!

What is the hardest thing for you about roller derby?
Refraining from trying to do everything, be everywhere, etc. I am making a conscious effort to make time for non-roller derby stuff.

What kind of player do you think you are?
I think I am a dedicated player. This time last year, I was just easing off crutches from my second major knee surgery - that one was for a partial meniscectomy and cartilage damage; the year before that it was the other knee for a broken knee cap, broken femur and my first partial meniscectomy. So, to be competing now makes me feel like I have a lot of patience have come a long way.

One of my funniest moments skating was during a drill where we partnered up with three other people. Two people formed a "wall" and you and your partner (mine was Bonnie Collide) were supposed get through the wall. I was in front and reached back to grab Bonnie's hand, I was a jackass and I didn't look and stuck my hand into her mouth and got tangled up in her mouth guard strap. Then, I kept reliving the moment, and I could not stop laughing and collapsed into a heap. Sometimes, I just can't stop laughing while playing - it is so much fun.

Do you have any phobias?
Yeah, random people giving me cash or free drinks with no strings attached.
